A museum shop reimagined as the final gallery
Ulster Museum appointed Whiteroom as lead consultancy for the proposed future investment of a new retail experience within one of Belfast’s most iconic cultural destinations. Set within a building that brings together Victorian heritage and bold brutalist architecture, the project required a careful balance of commercial thinking, visitor experience and respect for the museum’s architectural character.
The ambition was to move the shop beyond a traditional museum retail offer. Rather than creating a place for souvenirs alone, the concept positions the store as the final gallery, a destination in its own right where visitors can continue the story, discover local makers and take a piece of the museum experience home.
Designed within the RIBA framework and developed with heritage considerations in mind, the concept creates a bright, vibrant and strategically enhanced retail environment. It brings together product, place and cultural storytelling, giving Ulster Museum a stronger platform for Irish goods, artist collaborations, curated collections and meaningful visitor engagement.

Approach
We approached the shop as an extension of the museum journey, not a separate commercial add-on. The layout was designed to feel open, intuitive and easy to explore, with clear product zones, strong sightlines and moments of discovery that encourage visitors to slow down, browse and engage.
The design language responds to the character of the building while introducing a warmer, more contemporary retail experience. Architectural arches, soft material tones, layered lighting and refined display systems create a setting that feels generous, accessible and culturally relevant.
Product storytelling sits at the heart of the concept. From books and homeware to children’s ranges, exhibition-led collections and locally sourced craft, the space gives every category a clear role. It creates a platform for Irish artists, makers and brands, while supporting a range of price points for tourists, families, local visitors and museum members.

Project Value
The proposed retail concept gives Ulster Museum a stronger commercial and cultural platform within the wider visitor journey. It transforms the shop into a destination store, one that supports revenue, improves navigation and gives visitors a clearer reason to browse, buy and return.
By placing local artists, Irish makers and curated collections at the centre of the experience, the concept helps the museum extend its role beyond exhibition and education. It becomes a place that celebrates creativity, supports regional craft and gives visitors a more memorable connection to Belfast and Ireland.
Most importantly, the design shows how museum retail can be both commercially effective and culturally sensitive. It respects the architecture, enhances the visitor experience and creates a future-facing retail offer that feels worthy of the institution around it.
